A small, deliberate oddity
Why everything has a Japanese name
Every machine and every room has a soft, poetic Japanese word for a feeling or a thing โ never a job title. There is no clever technical reason. A rack of servers is already the most boring thing in the house, and a name that means a small light in a dark room beats server-01.
Two-syllable-ish, easy to say, means something gentle, and does not describe the job. โMedia serverโ is a job. โA small lightโ is a name. The names are also load-bearing: a name is what you use, and it outlives the machine underneath it.
01What each name means
| Name | Reading | Means | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Akari ใใใ | ah-kah-ree | a light, a glow | The biggest machine we own, and the familyโs shelf of films and music. A small light in a dark room. |
| Shizuku ใใใ | shee-zoo-koo | a droplet | The games machine, in the same building as Akari. Steady, quiet, dependable. |
| Tsubasa ใคใฐใ | tsoo-bah-sah | wings | The games control room, living inside Shizuku as its own separate machine. |
| Ichika | ih-chee-ka | a name in the same gentle theme โ the story behind it is Codyโs | The small desktop box that hosts the AI helpers, and travels in the truck. Ask him what the name means; that part is his, not mine. |
| Tamashii ใใพใใ | tah-mah-shee | a soul | The room that holds the films, the music and the living room of the house. |
| Genkan ็้ข | gen-kan | the entrance hall | The front door โ the room you take your shoes off in. The only way in. |
| Yuma ใใใใ | yoo-gen | deep, quiet evening beauty | The playroom: the AI, the stories, the voice, the games panel. |
| Tsudoi ใคใฉใ | tso-doh-ee | a gathering | The mailroom, where the finders and fetchers gather the things we ask for. |
| Kage ๅฝฑ | kah-geh | a shadow | Reserved for the off-site copy of the things that matter. Not built yet, so not announced. |

03The name the family chose
The deep helper is Luna and the quick one is Lily. The name that was open belonged to the family, and Haley chose it: Veronica โ the second deep seat, which opens when the machine on the desk gets its new card and can hold two conversations at once. A real name, chosen by a person, for a helper the whole family will talk to. That is the best answer this page has ever had.
Six names in the usual theme, put up for a vote before the family beat us to it. Kept here on purpose: this is what it looks like when a name is offered to the family rather than decided in a server room. The tally below is saved on your own device and is never sent anywhere.
Your vote is saved on your own device, so it stays when you come back. It is not sent anywhere, and nothing on this site can see who voted. The shortlist is a keepsake now, not a ballot โ Veronica won, and she won by being asked.
04The naming rule, in two lines
What we keep
- Machines and rooms get Japanese names โ soft, poetic, and never a job title.
- Helpers get peopleโs names โ Luna, Lily, Veronica. A helper is something you talk to, so it gets a name a person would answer to.
- Easy for a person who has never studied Japanese to say out loud.
- One name per thing, and the name outlives the machine under it.
What we will not do
- No naming a machine after a person. Names are for the family, not the rack โ a helper is not a machine, which is why Veronica is allowed.
- No announcing a name before it is built โ a name for a machine that does not exist yet is a promise, not a name.
- No inventing a name and pretending it was agreed. It has happened in our own notes, and it was struck out.
