The crew

Our own AI helpers

Not a website we subscribe to. Programs running on machines we own, answering from models we chose, on a network we control. Nobody keeps the conversations, nobody trains on them, and nothing stops working because a price changed. Today they answer in a window on a desk, for the two of us, and that is a test and not a service: family sign-ups open when alpha testing finishes, and the plan is a chat page with an account for each of us.

🌒

Luna In testing

The deep one, and the personal one. Slow on purpose, careful, and the one who writes the plans, measures the machines and checks the work — the helper who answers a question with “here is what I found, here is how I proved it, and here is what I got wrong last time”. She answers from the machine on the desk that has a proper graphics card: not from your screen, and not from a company’s building.

Lily In testing

The quick one, for the question you want answered in a second — the light research, the “what does this mean”, the lookup you would otherwise ask a big company’s website. She runs on one of our machines at home, and she is a working program, not a character: a fast little sister with the same rules.

Veronica Planned

The second deep seat, and the one the family named. The machine that thinks got its new card on 25 October 2026, so it can answer two conversations at the same time — the deep work stops queueing behind the person who asked first. Veronica is that second seat: a helper for the family to talk to while the first one is busy. What is missing is her model: a choice about which brain fills the seat, not a piece of hardware.

Named by Haley. The only name in this project the family chose, and the reason this page has a shortlist on it.

The story corner In testing

A model that is good at writing stories, with its own characters, its own memory, and room for more than one person’s worlds. It is a creative tool, and it is kept separate from the helpers on purpose: a model used for writing is not used for facts.

02The crew, at work

Three seats, two speeds. The quick one answers now; the deep ones take their time and show their working.

What they are for

  • Answering a question at 2am without a company keeping the transcript.
  • Writing and checking the plans you are reading on this site.
  • Fetching the film you asked for, and telling us when it lands.
  • Reading a book aloud in a voice you picked.
  • Doing chores with a budget and a stop button.

What they are never for

  • Anything that spends money, sends a message, or deletes a thing without a human.
  • Being a source of facts for homework or medicine. They are good, and they are not a reference.
  • Answering as a story model when a fact is needed. The two are kept apart.
  • Running unbounded. An agent that can loop for days is a fire, not a helper.

03The rules we keep them inside

The rules

  • Every answer says when an AI wrote it, and a human checks the technical claims.
  • One job per model. The story model does not answer facts; the fact model does not write fiction.
  • Every agent gets a budget, a stop button, and a kill switch — fitted on the day it is switched on, not after the first runaway.
  • They run on machines we own, so the cost of a runaway is our electricity, not a bill.
  • They never get the keys to a thing they do not need. Least privilege: the smallest set of keys that lets the job be done.
  • Your question, the answer, and the whole conversation stay inside the house. Nothing is sent to anybody’s server, nothing is kept to train on, and no person at a company reads it. If a helper ever has to use somebody else’s building, we say so on this page rather than letting it happen quietly.

What the family will notice

  • A chat page with an account for each of us, and a plain web address — no app, no settings, no tunnel.
  • Nobody in the family will ever be asked to install software to talk to the AI. That is a rule, not a hope.
  • Answers that say when they are unsure, and pages that say when we have not decided something.
  • Nothing you ask becomes somebody else’s training data.
Why “self-hosted” is worth the trouble

Because a helper that lives on our own machine cannot be taken away, cannot quietly change its rules, cannot see the family’s files, and cannot be priced out of the house. The cost is that we do the work — and the work is the reason the plan on this site exists at all.
