Welcome home
Our own little corner of the internet
We are building our own film shelf, our own music shelf, our own game servers, our own photo shelf and our own AI helpers โ on computers we own, in buildings we can walk into. No subscription we cannot cancel. Nobody able to take our photos away. This site is the friendly tour of what is coming, how it will reach your screen, and what we have not decided yet.
A network is a group of computers that can talk to each other. Ours is a small number of machines: two in a rented, air-conditioned server room, one on a desk that does the thinking, and the screen you are holding right now. That is the whole list.
You will never need an address, a port number, or a setting. You type a name, you log in once, and a machine in another building does the work. Everything here is written for the person holding the remote, not the person wiring the rack.
01The whole thing, in six numbers
Roughly where the plan stands. Numbers move โ that is the point of building.
02Start here
Three pages, in the order most people want them.
Things you can do
Films on the television, audiobooks in the car, a game server of your own, a photo shelf, and someone to ask. What is coming, and exactly what you will have to do.
See what is for you โ ๐The map
One picture: the machines, where they physically are, and how a film gets from there to your screen. Tap any box to read about it.
Open the map โ ๐๏ธWhat happens next
The build order, honestly: what is finished, what is in progress, and the list of things we have not decided โ two of which are yours to answer.
Look at the plan โ ๐ฃThe links
The one page of doors: which links work today, which ones are coming, and why the rest have no link at all yet.
Open the doors page โ03Three ideas the whole design rests on
If you only understand three things about how this is wired, make it these.
One front door
Exactly one machine faces the outside world, and it has exactly two doors open. Everything else in the house is reached through it. You get one login for everything; strangers get almost nothing to poke. The whole list of open doors fits in a short paragraph, which is the test we hold ourselves to.
Rooms, not one big machine
Inside the servers, each job lives in its own tidy room. If the download room floods, the front door still works and the films still play. Breaking the playroom does not take the television down.
Names, not numbers
Every service has a name, and the name is what you use. Behind the name we can swap machines, move rooms, and rebuild the lot โ and nothing you bookmarked breaks. A machine is replaceable; a name is not.
Where you type it: into a browser, the same way you type any address, and then you save it as a bookmark on the device in your pocket. One bookmark per service, no app to install, no settings to open, no code to scan. That is the whole setup, and it stays that way.
04Who does what
Two roles. That is the whole organisation chart.
Cody builds it
Buys the parts, wires the rooms, takes the blame when they break. If a page on this site is confusing, that is on him.
You use it
Press play. Ask a question. Join a game. That is your whole job, and it stays that way: nothing on this list ever asks you to install software, read a manual, or type a number.
The helpers do the chores
Our own AI helpers fetch the film you asked for, answer the question at 2am, and read a book aloud in a chosen voice โ on machines we own, where nobody keeps the conversations.
05What you will be able to do
Working today live and in use now Being built working, not finished Planned designed, not started Undecided we want your opinion
| Service | State | What that means in the house |
|---|---|---|
| Films & TV on the television and on your screen | Live โ Jellyfin | The one thing that is live and in use today. About 11 TB on our own disks, played by Jellyfin, on the television and on your screen at home. |
| Music & audiobooks | Planned | Designed, and the shelf they will live on is the live one โ but the music and audiobook shelves are not set up yet, and the bookmark-per-person part is a plan, not a thing. |
| Game servers | Being built | The 18-core games machine runs in the datacentre today. Asking us for a server works now; the page where you start and stop one yourself is being built. |
| AI helpers (Luna, Lily & Veronica) | In testing | Answering from our own machines in testing โ for the two of us. No company sees the conversations. There are no family accounts yet: sign-ups open when alpha testing finishes. A second deep seat, so two of you can ask at the same time, is named and waiting for its model โ the machine that answers has had the card to do it since 25 October. |
| One login for everything | In testing | Built and proven: the login page answers, and the film shelf opens with it. It is not yet wired to every app, so the apps being built still have their own accounts for now. |
| Ask for a film by name | Being built | The request page and the finders around it are running. What is missing is the accounts they search โ the ones lost in the rebuild, and only in a personโs records. |
| Books read aloud in a chosen voice | Planned | Measured and proven on our own hardware; the shelf around it is not built yet. |
| Status page & alerts | Working today | Running: one page with 18 checks, all green the day this site was last rebuilt, and alerts that fire on three failures in a row rather than one. |
| Real backups | Being built | Honest admission: today we have none. The plan is agreed; the destination is not chosen. This is the top of the queue. |
| Family photos | Undecided | The question in plain words: do you want your phone to copy its pictures to our own drives as soon as you are home โ the same thing a big company does, on our own disk, with nobody training on your faces and nothing deleted when an account lapses? Not in the plan yet, because it needs decisions about space and privacy. Tell us and it goes in. |
One service is live and in use today โ the film shelf. Everything else on this site is built, being built, or planned, and every card says which. When alpha testing finishes we open sign-ups, and each of you gets your own account: your own shelf, your own place in the book, your own helper. No page here will ever ask you to install something to get any of it.
Two things we genuinely want to hear about: photos (do you want every device in the family quietly copying its pictures to our own shelf?) and the name of the familyโs own AI helper โ there is a whole page for that, with a vote. Say the word on either and it changes the plan.
Every page is written for you, not for us. Where something is finished we say so; where it is half-built we say that; where we have not decided, we ask. And no page here will ever print an address, a password, or a way in.
